The flaw students often make in understanding literary analysis is that because adhering to the literal truth of the text is not as important, any interpretation is just as good as the other one because what does it really mean anyway? However, to paraphrase Richard Rohr, literal truth is the lowest form of truth. In this scenario, what a text is is so much less important than what a text means.

In fact, I would argue that each of the films Captain America has been in so far, from The First Avenger to Age of Ultron, have him define what being an American hero is in under new contexts. Captain America is a cypher onto which values and motifs are put, and while his character has been consistent, how those values and motifs are explored changes with the times.
But how does this change from The First Avengers to The Avengers? What really makes him an American hero?
